[Tunnel Book (Peepshow Book)]
In Europe, from around the 17th century, tunnel books, also known as "peepshow books" or "mechanical books," were published. These books featured a folded accordion-style structure that could be extended to reveal an internal space when viewed through a hole in the front. By extending the folded sections and evenly positioning the cut-out cardboard, an internal space is created. "Mechanical books" were mainly produced in early 19th-century England and gained popularity. The item for sale is a reprint of a book published in the 19th century, and it is difficult to obtain in Japan. The cover is in the form of a book, and the contents connect the pictures in an accordion shape. When the accordion section is expanded and you look through the central peep hole, a three-dimensional landscape with depth appears. This is a particularly elaborate structure among the "mechanical books" of the time, and it vividly expresses the scenery inside the Crystal Palace of the 1st London World's Fair held in England in 1851. The original pictures were printed in monochrome (ink) using lithography and then hand-colored. The 3D world experienced through analog has a unique atmosphere and evokes nostalgia. Now, you in your study, please look through this hole and take a trip to the 19th-century world for a while.
