To see undeniable evidence that racing enhances performance, look no further than the inaugural 911 Turbo, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1974. Porsche's decision to compete in the Can-Am race with the 917 in 1972 led to the realization that its 5-liter engine needed a boost to match the Chevrolet engines of over 8 liters from the competition. This boost came in the form of a turbocharger. Initially, the 930 Turbo's engine was to be based on the 2.7-liter engine, but tests showed that the 3.0-liter Carrera engine was more suitable due to its better idling behavior and reduced lag, not just for its added power. This engine was installed in the already cramped 911 engine compartment, with its KKK turbocharger blowing at around 0.8 bar to increase power to 260 hp. More power could have been achieved, but Porsche limited it mainly to avoid frightening customers. A whale-tail rear spoiler was added to help evacuate more air to the engine and create more downforce at the rear of the vehicle, and wider rear wheels with improved tires combined with widened fenders (+120mm) were added to increase the 911's grip, making it more stable.
